The America Makes & ANSI Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC) was officially launched in March 2016 as a cross-sector coordinating body with the goal of accelerating the development of industry-wide additive manufacturing standards and specifications that meet the needs of stakeholders, thereby facilitating the growth of the additive manufacturing industry. The AMSC was formed because many standards development organizations (SDOs) are developing standards for various aspects of additive AMSC does not create standards or specifications. Rather, its purpose is to help facilitate coordinated standards development activities.
On May 1, 2023, America Makes and ANSI released a draft Additive Manufacturing Standardization Roadmap Version 3.0 for public review and comment developed by AMSC, last published in June 2018. This roadmap identifies key issues, annotates relevant published and in-development standards currently within the additive manufacturing space, and provides recommendations to address gaps in additive manufacturing (AM) standards and specifications, which includes the necessary upfront research and development (R&D) guidance to advance the standardization process. It also provides a prioritized timeline for when standardization efforts will take place and for the Standards Development Organization (SDO) or other body that may lead such efforts. Since the kick-off event in September 2022, the working group (including a new working group on additive manufacturing lifecycle data) has been working to advance the development of the draft roadmap.
Feedback will require access to a specially provided form (see below) to allow the working group to better manage and review comments. The AMSC working group is currently on hiatus and will reconvene in June to address the comments received and finalize the document by the end of July 2023. While all comments are welcome, AMSC reserves the right to address comments in future iterations of the document if they cannot be addressed in the time available. This may include, for example, comments on the organization of the document or unresolved issues.
The AMSC roadmap was developed with input from hundreds of experts from industry, government, SDO, and academia and describes the current and desired future standardization outlook for the additive manufacturing industry. The focus is on industrial additive manufacturers across all market segments that use additive manufacturing technologies. The roadmap is intended for a broad audience, including OEMs, materials manufacturers, government and industry users of additive manufacturing, SDOs, the R&D community, and others. The roadmap introduces additional metadata in the unrefined section to facilitate searches by lifecycle area, industry sector, material type, additive manufacturing processes, and qualification and certification categories. The unrefined section also considers alternatives currently in use until an additive manufacturing standard or specification can be used to solve the problem.
For the past several years, AMSC has been issuing semi-annual progress reports to keep the roadmap as a "living document", tracking the release of new standards or new standards projects initiated by SDO to address outstanding parts of the standard and updating Recommendation Version 2.0. activities, including process control to achieve qualification, additive manufacturing design, feedstock materials, and inspection/monitoring. Following the release of a survey on the use of the roadmap in early 2022, the AMSC Advisory Group, comprised of industry, government and SDO representatives, concluded that it was time to update the document to keep it relevant and in line with current applications and stakeholder needs.
